I was talking in another comm about how my appreciation for Mamoru has grown over the years. He used to come off as nothing more than a tall-dark-and-handsome cardboard cutout, kind of the male equivalent of the "love interest who doesn't get any development aside from being the Token Chick." After seeing a bunch of the later canon plus better translations of the early stuff, I came to understand (and love) how much he is secretly a ginormous dork.

Long story short, the conversation led to a linkspam, and I figured some folks here might enjoy it as well.

Anime:
~Mamoru is basically Chibusa's transportation.
Skaters gonna skate.
~Boring people do not walk into battle dressed like Santa.
~When you're the only fighter in the team without a proper transformation, you gotta enjoy yourself.
~Caught in the bath. Whoops?

Musicals:
~King of the Earth, in a frilly pink apron, makin' dinner.

And a few fancomics to drive home the point (sorry about the icky Tumblr formatting):
~A proper superhero naming scheme.
~Lil' Mamoru dresses up as Batman.
~Thinking on his feet.

Hi everyone - just wanted to let you all know I changed the layout for the community page, to something that's a little easier to customize. Please let me know if you experience any issues with the layout (the only thing I can think of is on smaller screens, that the header text might overlap the header picture), so I can tweak things and make it look nice for everyone!

I'm also thinking of rotating the header picture out with artwork that's not my own - if anyone here is an artist and wants to create a header picture, let me know! I'm thinking of switching it out every month or so. (The current picture is 600 by 385 pixels, if anyone's curious.)

It's a crying shame how decentralized SM fic-writing fandom is. So many archives of a few hundred stories each! So many stories duplicated across multiple archives, in the hopes that readers will have an account for at least one of them! And that's only if you're lucky. If you're unlucky, you end up on a personal website with eye-watering formatting.

In an attempt to make it easier to track newly-posted fics, I've started adding RSS feeds to DW from the archives that enable them. (For those who don't know, you can add these to your reading page just like users or communities.) Here's what I have so far:

[syndicated profile] dgrfa_new_feed: new fics at Destiny's Gateway Romance Fanfiction Archives
[syndicated profile] smfiction_new_feed: new fics at SailormoonFiction.com
[syndicated profile] ffnet_bssm_feed: new fics in Fanfiction.net's Sailor Moon category

And here's the "to add if/when they get working RSS feeds" list:
dotmoon
the AO3's Sailor Moon category

Of course, these are only the archives where I happen to have stumbled across good SM fic. Does anyone have suggestions for more?

This is the last of the videos available on Sera Myu Antics, which means it's the last of my watchthroughs.

It's been a ton of fun having an excuse to watch all of these. Special thanks to everyone who's read and commented along ^_^

like 10+ years old... it was about that long ago. anyway, it was one of the Usagi-runs-away fics: she goes to the States and incidentally finds all 4 of the Generals reborn. the meeting reawakens their memories so she gathers the four and they convince her to go back. (royalty trade entourages. ^^) i don't think there was an enemy in it, mostly the angst and drama of the reunions. the only specifics i remember is she runs into Kunzite in the airport when they land and Zoisite's a famous author from Canada.

i picked ff.net apart and couldn't find it. any help/ideas?

Title: Artemis Parthenos
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Characters/Pairings: Venus/Artemis, Luna/Artemis, various royals
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Canon character deaths. Spoilers for the first arc and the Sailor V manga, plus light references to the rest of the series.
Disclaimer: The series, settings, and characters are not mine. All hail Naoko-hime.

Scenes from Artemis' past life, growing up and having girl trouble. In any other era, with any other girls, this wouldn't even have been a footnote to history; but these are princesses and royal advisors, in the twilight of the Silver Millennium.

For the Magical Girl Fic/Art Swap 2011. The princesses' names come from epithets used for their respective gods in Roman mythology, while their parents are named for the corresponding Greek gods. The poetry is from translations of Sappho; similar verses must have been written by her previous incarnation.

As long as I'm here, let me rec you this episode recap, featuring the Moon Kingdom's downfall in blank verse.

Characters/Pairings: Kaolinite, Eudial, Mimete, Viluy; Jon, Olivia, "Stephen"; Homura/Madoka; Lyra, Pan; Sharon, Roslin, Tory, Tigh; Four, Sarah Jane
Rating: PG
Warnings: Spoils ALL THE THINGS, especially MadoMagi, HDM, and BSG.
Disclaimer: Not a single one of these series is mine. More's the pity.

What it says on the tin. Heart crystals that Kaolinite and the Witches 5 would have gone after, if only they'd existed in the same series.

Most of these involve AU versions of the crossover characters' canon settings. Just pretend those years and areas were the ones in which the Death Busters set up shop...and then ignore all the continuity issues that brings up ^_^;

While reading the new translation of volume 1, and occasionally flipping through the old translation to see how the art compared, I came across the scene where Luna first opens the secret base. Instead of using a Japanese passphrase, she says something in completely alien characters.

Here's the scene from the flipped Mixx manga (I have no idea whether they flipped the alien dialogue bubbles or not):

Large image under cut )

The updated version of the scene has a cuter Luna, a different logo for the game...and a different portrayal of the language. Instead of these dot-and-line characters, they're made up of planetary symbols (some rotated, some not), plus a couple of the asteroids (I caught Ceres and Vesta) thrown in.

I don't have a clean scan of the updated art; can anybody link to one? Also, does anyone have a scan of the original, unedited Japanese version?

And does anyone remember if this was ever used again in the manga? I'm almost certain it never came up in the anime -- which is a shame, as it's a fantastic detail that didn't deserve to be thrown in and then forgotten about.

ETA: Scan of the updated version! And for the record, it looks like the symbols are (left-to-right):
Chiron, Uranus, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, Neptune
Ceres, Venus, Saturn, Pallas, Mars, Chiron, Juno
(all upside-down): Ceres, Pluto, Jupiter, Uranus, Pallas, Chiron, Saturn

Wikipedia has a symbol list, for anyone who wants to see them all in one place.

The newly translated Sailor Moon and Sailor V manga hit shelves tomorrow! (Or have already hit shelves, in a few stores that didn't care about the release dates, but oh well.) I'm planning to hit up a midnight release party in Boston, and feeling nostalgic already.

Sailor Moon was the first fandom where I seriously read fanfic, and I do mean seriously. I remember methodically going through every single SM link on the Anime Web Turnpike, one by one, and reading everything I could get my hands on. Terrible summary? No problem. Pairing I couldn't buy? I don't think there were any. Original character that would get dismissed by the discerning modern eye as a Mary Sue? Have at it. Which sounds dismissive, but it's how I found a ton of amazing stuff that still holds up ten years later.

90% of fics at the time were posted as text files, all on personal websites and individually-run archives. I saved favorites to my hard drive, and uploaded a bunch of them to a Tripod site of my own -- for some reason it didn't occur to my twelve-year-old self to ask the authors, or think of this as a breach of etiquette. The fic I wrote myself tended not to get uploaded anywhere, which is probably a blessing, as it was mostly epics with ensemble teams of interchangeable OCs. Sometimes I daydream about doing a proper rewrite of the one that had actual potential (the attack of a Chaos-avatar on the Re system, about fifty years before the fall of the Silver Millennium, in which the quest to awaken the local senshi and defeat the enemy slowly transforms into a quest to gather as many survivors as they can and get them the hell out of Dodge).

After I finished the Anipike list, there was a time when I didn't read much new material. When I got back to fic-reading, it was in different fandoms, and the rise of LJ and ff.net had changed everything in the meantime. The direct feedback mechanisms (besides "email the author") helped me reframe fics as the products of individual, dynamic users, rather than impersonal sheets of HTML floating in webspace; the ability to +mem or +fav individual posts made saving seem redundant. It was years later before the authorial deletion of some of those favorite fics got me back to saving things again.

And I'm reading SM again, though I'm out of practice searching for fic that isn't on LJ/DW (where SM fandom never really parked), and there's no way I'm ever going to sit down and process all 30,000 Sailor Moon fics on ff.net. There are smaller archives, either SM-specific or with a limited selection of other fandoms, that have been great to sit down and meander through. Here's the current state of my SM bookmarks (all with copies safely backed up to my hard drive). Most recently updated last night, when I laughed so hard at Kitty Quest that I sprayed toothpaste all over my computer screen.

In between browsing the new, I've been sorting through the old: going through that saved-for-ten-years cache of fics and Googling individual lines, trying to find an active version online somewhere. Some have moved to ff.net. Others are still available as free-floating text files. Still others no longer exist anywhere online except...my old Tripod site. Eheh. I'd delete them if I remembered the password (or the account name, for that matter); as-is, all I can do is avoid linking to them, and hope the site is obscure enough not to be noticed.

The manga release is in ten hours. If you're feeling half as nostalgic as I am by now, share your own fandom memories here.

Project complete! This also fills the "hostages" prompt on my card for [community profile] hc_bingo.

The whole thing was inspired during Otakon, where I heard people on two completely unrelated panels say, "Sailor Moon isn't a strong female character because she always needs her boyfriend to save her!" (I swear, that hurts just to type.)

Anyone who's in the fandom at all will have noticed that Tuxedo Mask gets kidnapped constantly. I'm a long-time fan, and when I started writing the actual list down, even I was surprised how long it got. Between the anime and the manga, there's not a single arc of the story where he doesn't spend some time as a hostage of the bad guys. That's not even counting the live-action series. Or the musicals.

(Although even if you've only caught an episode here and there, there's no excuse for not noticing that—while Tuxedo Mask is good for distracting the mooks-of-the-day—it's always a sailor senshi who casts the finishing move.)

So have a picspam of Sailor Moon's erstwhile caped crusader, in all his hostage-being, brainwash-suffering, reverse-manpain-fueling, never-giving-up-anyway glory. If this doesn't drive the point home, nothing will.

'Tuxedo Mask was made in my image of an ideal man, because I like men that I can't rely on.' (125 caps in 30 image files) )
Do you know the only reward you get for being Batman? You get to be Batman.

For a very good reason which I will explain in another post, I'm trying to come up with a list of all the incidents when Mamoru gets kidnapped/brainwashed/tied up/held hostage.

So far, I have:

(Edited to add the second round of suggestions!)

Anime, first season (35): kidnapped by Beryl
Anime, first season (41): healed by Usagi, re-kidnapped by Beryl
Anime, SMR movie: kidnapped by Fiore
Anime, SMS (101-102): kidnapped by Kaolinite
Anime, SMS (116): held captive briefly by MotD
Anime, SMSS (148): held captive briefly by Fish Eye
Anime, Stars (early mini-arc): kidnapped by Neherenia

Manga, first arc: kidnapped by Beryl
Manga, R arc: kidnapped by Black Lady
Manga, Stars arc: kidnapped(-ish) by Galaxia

SeraMyu, Gaien Dark Kingdom Fukkatsu Hen: kidnapped by Beryl
SeraMyu, Ein Densetsu: kidnapped(-ish?) by Galaxia for Beryl
SeraMyu, Shin Densetsu Kourin: same as above
SeraMyu, Last Dracul Jokyoku: turned into a vampire

PGSM: kidnapped by Beryl, mindwhammied by Metallia

I've forgotten all the changes in PGSM; was he evil there for a while too? And are there other minibosses or monsters-of-the-day who had him in their clutches that I'm forgetting?

Any help would be appreciated!

As your fearless leader/mod type person, I just wanted to let you know of some awesome things I found on the internet in the past few days.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard of the re-release of the Sailor Moon manga in English... but the first four volumes, plus the first two of Sailor V, are up on Amazon.com for preorder. :D (The first volume will be on its way to me in September!)

What made me really squee, though, was finding Sailor Moon t-shirts in Hot Topic! Back when I was still pretty new in the Sailor Moon fandom (and a very rabid fangirl), Hot Topic sold a whole bunch of Sailor Moon shirts. I think I bought one of each of them, haha. They've got four of them online, and in case you're curious to see them, here they are:

Tuxedo Mask - I Need A Hero

Luna and Artemis - We're Purrfect Together

Inner Senshi Girls

Sailor Moon

Now if only I had the money to get them all....

Hopefully this means Sailor Moon is making a comeback in the US! :D If so, I'm going to have to get a bigger shelf to keep my collection on, haha.
